Every designer begins with a motive. A necessity that can only be resolved with the help of design thinking. Keeping that in mind, but extending the circumference a little wider into a global cause, is what this year’s JDDA (JD Design Awards) theme is all about.
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. The 3Rs that everyone is taught from school, is now being initiated by many across the globe. It is now time for the next step. For one and all to SYNC and live as one with Mother Nature.
This year’s JD Design Awards invites all aspiring designers to fall in love with the World Of Nature and find inspiration from it’s work and beauty. Let’s showcase the magic of Nature!

THE GLOBAL GOALS PAVILION, Es Devlin
Forest for Change Somerset House, London
Es Devlin was told that trees were forbidden from the courtyard at somerset house when the building was originally conceived 250 years ago.
Es decided to “counter this attitude of human dominance over nature, by allowing a forest to overtake the entire courtyard.”
This is a bold statement that mirrors the audacious nature of the global sustainable development goals.

SOLUTION TO
Citrus Waste ORANGE FIBRE
Only in Italy, 1 million tonnes of citrus juice by-products are produced each year; globally, 110-120 million tonnes of citrus waste are generated yearly.
The disposal of citrus juice by-products is hugely detrimental to the environment.
The Italian company has developed and patented fabrics made from citrus by-products that are eco friendly.
SOLUTION TO Throw Away Culture
The throwaway culture of fast fashion encourages consumers to think of apparel as disposable and easily replaceable.
Consumers throw away 60% of their garments in the first year on an average.
Fashion is a significant contributor to the annual 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
I WAS A SARI – An Indian social venture that sells upcycled products created from pre-loved saris, such as ready-to-wear clothing and accessories.
Factory waste is repurposed into small limited edition collections at Doodlage. Reuse post-consumer waste and fabric scraps to make seasonless, well-finished clothing that would last a long time. Waste is separated and transformed into accessories, upholstery, and paper for use in packaging and stationery.
SOLUTION TO Marine Plastic
Oceanic: Polyester with a Purpose
Upcycled marine plastic is combined with other post-consumer plastic waste to create SEQUEAL YARN.
In terms of characteristics, it’s almost similar to virgin polyester.
Fabrics for apparel, accessories, and furniture are woven with this yarn
“Oceanic is a great material because it is made of 100% post-consumer recycled plastic, from debris floating discarded in our seas. It adds a great purpose to the furniture we design, and it can represent a big step towards fully sustainable products”
Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.

SO & SO STUDIO
The Casa Mac House
Vicenza, Italy
The team at So & So Studio studied the blind lady’s routine and movement throughout the house and developed a design, based on the simple glyphic language. The transition from one space to another with the least barriers was essential, which was achieved by removing door thresholds and unnecessary material changes. The architects categorized the daily activities into “nodes” and created a central corridor system connecting the garage, front door, and backyard patio. The central spine of the house eliminated the maze-like structure of regular homes to create a hassle-free simple lifestyle.
