Students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Berhampur, have demonstrated an inspiring blend of creativity, sustainability, and craftsmanship through a unique project titled “Fabric of Respect.” The initiative involved the creation of a large-scale textile portrait of Narendra Modi, crafted entirely from waste fabric—without the use of glue, paint, or printing techniques.
Measuring approximately 6 feet by 5 feet, the artwork stands as a testament to the possibilities of sustainable design. The portrait was developed over a period of 20 days by three dedicated student teams, who meticulously worked on every detail using only hand-stitching methods. Each fabric piece was carefully cut, arranged, and stitched to form a visually striking and texturally rich composition.
Concept and Execution
The project was conceptualized with a strong focus on upcycling and responsible design practices. Waste fabric was sourced from local tailoring units and sewing centers, reinforcing the importance of resource optimization within the fashion ecosystem. By transforming discarded materials into a meaningful work of art, the students highlighted how sustainability can be seamlessly integrated into creative expression.
What makes this project particularly noteworthy is the complete absence of adhesives or artificial coloring methods. The reliance on traditional hand-stitching techniques not only emphasizes craftsmanship but also reflects patience, discipline, and precision—core values in design education.
